Generation 1 does not show gender. It gets decided later, when the Pokémon is transferred, from a hidden value: the Attack DV, a number from 0 to 15 rolled at capture that the game never shows. If you want a particular one: save before the capture, catch the Pokémon, read the five stats it shows you and type them in below. The tool works back to the possible DVs and tells you which gender you will get. If it is not the one you were after, reset without saving and catch it again.
